President’s Report

Hello,

The Chicago EWI Chapter hosted the 2008 Spring Conference on May 1-3, 2008 at the Hilton Suites on Chicago ’s Magnificent Mile.  The literature that we received announcing the conference stated,

“Come enjoy an informative conference and the wonderful, beautiful city of Chicago;”

the conference lived up to the promotion.  The program began on Thursday, May 1st with one of the modules from the Academy of Leadership , “The Power of Relationships,” facilitated by Lori Giovannoni.  I had the privilege of attending this module in Chattanooga last spring and was very impressed with the high caliber of instructors that EWI has assembled to facilitate the Academy of Leadership . In speaking with the ladies that attended the module in Chicago , they were equally pleased with Lori Giovannoni’s presentation.   On Thursday evening, the Chicago Chapter hosted a reception.  It was an informal event where members could meet and get reacquainted with EWI friends from other Chapters.  On Friday, Marjorie Tarplee, EWI Corporate President 1972-1973 and Life member of the Indianapolis Chapter, spoke about the Importance of Involvement in Civic Activities.   Joe Shacter, Senior Policy Advocate for the Environmental Law and Policy Center , addressed the group regarding “Being Green – What Does It Mean?”  Ross Johnson (mentalist, mind reader, clairvoyant, telepath, gifted psychic performer) delighted and baffled the group with his performance of “The Mind and How It Works.”   The afternoon session was comprised of two workshops, The Creative Process – Opening the Mind to New Ideas by Ross Johnson and The Truth about Balance – How to Achieve the Unexpected by Colette Carlson.   The day ended with a Corporate Board Update.    Those participants that were able to stay on Saturday heard from Greg Elliott on the topic of Personal Branding and from Second City Communications on Collaborative Leadership and Communicating with Confidence.   The Chicago Chapter did an excellent job at combining great speakers, timely topics and a wonderful venue for learning.

Back at home…. our Chapter held our annual Ways and Means fund raiser.  The money that we collect will benefit the Keep New Mexico Reading program, the Kasey Says Program and help fund a scholarship for a graduate student at the University of New Mexico .  The Spring Tea was held on Saturday, May 3rd.   Everyone enjoyed an exciting and fun afternoon on the patio at Church Street Café.   I think we all had a good time bidding on the Silent Auction Items.  It got a little tense at the end of the silent auction when people were rushing to get their last minute bids in before the papers were collected ( I hope I didn’t hurt anyone pushing my way to the Ben Bridge necklace bid sheet).   The fashion show featured two lines of clothing.  Our own Priscilla Brower, representative for Weekenders USA, and The Wild Rose specializing in the Double D Ranch clothing asked members from our chapter to model their gorgeous clothes.   Sharon Hoover Thorpe, Ways and Means Chair, and her committee worked very hard to put together this very successful Tea.   Thank you to everyone that was involved in the planning, preparation and execution of this wonderful event.  Great job ladies, now we have the funds to continue our work in the community.

 Sincerely,

Jessica Chavez
