Bowling for Charity

Literacy Volunteers

February 1, 2007

Thank you wonderful bowlers for coming out and supporting our fundraiser again this year!  It is so nice to see familiar faces and meet new people!  The staff at TenPins & More did a great job.  The Board of Directors and staff for ReadWest who donated raffle prizes added a special touch to the event!  Sprint, Congresswoman Heather Wilson’s office, Hyatt Regency Tamaya, CePi 2 Charter School, ReadWest Volunteers, CitiGroup, Executive Women International and Alexis’ Body & Skin Care were among the teams vying for the trophies donated by Accolades Trophies!  Congresswoman Heather Wilson stopping by to root her staff on and Stanley the Scorpion dropping by to entertain the bowlers helped make the event a triumph!  The event was great fun and $1,780 was raised for Adult Literacy programs at the ReadWest Literacy Center in Rio Rancho.

And, the winners are……

First Place - Sprint Pinsetters, Donovan Silva, Emily Sauer, Jeff Sauer and Mario Carrillo.

Second Place – La Raza, O. Gutierrez, Abel McBride, Jose Viramontes, and P. Baratta.

Third Place – CePi Titans, Stephen Howden, Cari Kimble, Glen Hushman and Dusti Griffin.

Dusti Griffin, by the way, bowled a 300 at TenPins & More within the last few weeks and is one of the top women bowlers in the state!

ReadWest serves about 250 adults each year who are challenged by illiteracy.  As an extra effort, we also serve parents who need help getting their children to become better readers.  Last year we helped over 200 parents and gave away close to 600 books to children from infant to second grade.  Our primary mission is helping adults learn to read and write, get their GED, and to speak English as a Second Language.  Adult Illiteracy is a quiet problem, but 1 out of 4 New Mexicans cannot read above the lowest level due to either a lack of education or a language barrier.

The number of students served has tripled in the Adult Literacy Program over the past two years but the funds have not grown with it!  We are working to engage more businesses and volunteers in the community in an effort to meet the growing demands.  We are succeeding because of people like you who take the time to get to know us and what we are offering to this community.

Again, thanks!  You all are so much fun; please convey my appreciation to your team members.  We’ve already booked the last Saturday in January for the 2008 Bowling for Literacy fundraiser!  Hope to see you all again next year.

Susan Ryerson, Executive Director

PS – If you are interested in being involved throughout the year, there are several opportunities to do so.  Tutoring is fun and easy.  You receive free training and the commitment is once a week for two hours at your convenience.  “Literacy Friends” is a group you can join – they will work on an annual fundraiser each year and brainstorm ideas to raise awareness of adult illiteracy.  Call me anytime to discuss!  235-0714.
